Introduction

We provide a curriculum that is broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated to provide for all abilities. Barriers to learning are removed and we provide suitable learning challenges that respond to diverse needs. This encompasses a variety of exciting experiences to enable our children to acquire appropriate skills, knowledge and understanding to prepare them for today’s world. Through the provision of a stimulating environment, children will develop to their full potential academically, socially and physically. Parents are kept informed about curriculum issues by half termly curriculum webs.

The curriculum has been updated to meet all current National Curriculum requirements, the Foundation Curriculum for the Early Years, and the Curriculum 2014 for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.   Very careful attention is paid to the teaching of reading and the basics of numeracy, but the children also work at written English, Technology including Information Technology, Religious Education, Music, Humanities, Art, Science, and Physical Education.  A topic or thematic approach is used to develop scientific knowledge and may be used to encompass the Humanities - History, Geography and Religious Education. These are also subject-based, as appropriate.

 

FOUNDATION STAGE PROFILE

The new foundation curriculum came into force in September 2012. It contains early learning goals which set out what most children are expected to achieve by the end of the Reception year. The curriculum is organised into seven areas of learning, namely: communication and language; physical development; personal, social and emotional development; literacy; mathematics; understanding the world; and expressive arts and design.

The curriculum documentation also includes principles for early year’s education and features of good practice. This is an on-going assessment which is collated during the final term. The aim of the assessment is to give an indication of each child’s development in specific areas. The results will be issued to parents in the annual report in the Summer Term.

YEAR 1 – Reading Tests, in the form of the Standardised Phonics Test, are administered in the Summer Term. SATs At the end of KS1 (age 7), children have Teacher Assessments in English and Maths. Children will be working on Levels 1, 2 and 3 of the National Curriculum, with most children achieving Level 2 by the end of this key stage. At the end of KS2 children are required to undertake Statutory Standardised Assessment Tests in English - including SPAG Test (spelling, punctuation and grammar), Maths and Science.

In KS2 children will be working on Levels 2 to 5 with most achieving Level 4 by the end of this key stage. The results of these tests are published to parents in the form of the Annual Report in the Summer Term. KS2 results are published nationally in the form of league tables. Assessment levels are likely to change in 2015. If the 11+ is still a statutory requirement, then the school will administer it in line with County guidelines.
